The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken decisive action in response to fatal road accidents, canceling the driver’s licenses of eight individuals, including a 21-year-old truck driver involved in a tragic incident on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, announced that these individuals faced showcause proceedings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. As part of the penalty, the young truck driver, who was operating his vehicle with an expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the accident, has received a five-year license suspension, reflecting the severity of the situation.

In his statement, Mr. Rokosawa emphasized the importance of road safety and warned drivers that reckless behavior carries serious consequences. He stated, “This serves as a lesson for all license holders—be they Learners, Provisional, or Full License holders—to adhere strictly to licensing conditions and road safety rules.”

The recent accident has prompted concern about the rising prevalence of reckless driving. To address this issue, the LTA is now collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to target repeat traffic offenders and revise current traffic regulations. Under the Crimes Act 2009, driving in a rash or negligent manner is considered a summary offense and can lead to a maximum of two years in prison.

Mr. Rokosawa reiterated the LTA’s commitment to zero tolerance for reckless driving and the need for vigilant enforcement. He underscored that safe driving is not merely a personal responsibility but also a social obligation, warning that “one moment of negligence can cause irreparable harm.”

These actions by the LTA signal a growing recognition of the urgent need to tackle road safety issues proactively. By instituting stricter regulations and encouraging responsible driving, the LTA aims to create safer roads for all users. The cancellation of licenses serves as a reminder to all drivers about the critical importance of adhering to safety rules and the potential consequences of neglecting them.

Overall, while the circumstances surrounding these cancellations are tragic, they create an opportunity for change and improvement in road safety protocols, hopefully leading to a decline in reckless driving incidents in the future.
