LTA Takes Strong Stand on Road Safety: 114 Licenses Canceled and Fatalities Drop

In the past year, the Land Transport Authority has revoked 114 driver licenses and suspended 13 others, according to Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa.

As of August 27, the reported number of road fatalities is 38, showing a significant decrease from the 62 fatalities reported during the same period last year.

However, Rokosawa emphasized that every life lost is a tragic occurrence, and the Authority, in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and other vital stakeholders, remains dedicated to reducing road fatalities and ensuring the safety of all Fijians on the roads.

“Road fatalities are frequently the result of preventable actions such as speeding, driving under the influence, pedestrian negligence, and other reckless driving behaviors,” he stated.

“Every statistic signifies a life lost, which underscores the LTA’s intensified efforts during National Road Safety Week to promote awareness of the importance of following road safety regulations and standards.”

The Authority’s road safety education and enforcement teams are working diligently to ensure that the safety message reaches all areas of the community.

Through community outreach, educational initiatives, and strict enforcement measures, these teams aim to convey that road safety is a shared responsibility among everyone using the roads—be it pedestrians, passengers, or drivers.

Rokosawa said that National Road Safety Week serves as an essential platform to bring together all stakeholders in the effort to combat road accidents.

Together with the Fiji Police Force, the LTA is focusing on educating the public about the repercussions of unsafe driving practices and the significance of shared responsibility for road safety.

While education and awareness are fundamental to the LTA’s strategy, Rokosawa noted that enforcement remains crucial in deterring dangerous driving behaviors. The Authority is committed to holding offenders accountable through its showcause process.
