LTA Takes Aim at Reckless Influencers: A Call for Safe Driving

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and all drivers to halt any risky driving practices, including the use of mobile phones and other devices to film their activities while behind the wheel.

LTA’s Acting Chief Executive, Irimaia Rokosawa, highlighted the growing trend of dangerous driving videos shared on platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, which both violate the law and endanger road safety.

In recent months, there has been a concerning rise in such videos featuring hazardous driving behavior. Rokosawa emphasized that these posts, which often gather significant viewing numbers, misleadingly suggest that such actions are permissible, which is not the case. He reiterated that participating in these activities is both illegal and irresponsible.

“Sharing videos of reckless driving on social media is not just risky; it is profoundly negligent. It sets a harmful example for others who may view these behaviors as acceptable. We must stress that driving while distracted by electronic devices is illegal and extremely dangerous,” Rokosawa stated.

He called on influencers and all motorists to promptly discontinue these actions and focus on ensuring safety on the roads. The LTA is actively monitoring social media to identify and tackle these hazardous activities.

The consequences of distractions while driving can be grave. Using electronic devices increases the risk of accidents and threatens the safety of all road users. Factors such as speeding, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, fatigue, and distraction significantly contribute to fatal accidents. It is essential that all drivers understand the seriousness of their actions and take responsibility for road safety.

To address the increase in reckless driving during this busy travel season, the LTA will enhance its enforcement measures. Enforcement personnel will be deployed to monitor high-traffic areas, particularly around bus and taxi stands, major roads, and known accident-prone zones.

Rokosawa indicated that speed limits and traffic regulations would be stringently enforced, with particular attention paid to detecting and deterring reckless and impaired driving.

“Our primary goal is to ensure the safety and welfare of all road users. By ramping up enforcement, we aim to create a safer driving environment and decrease the incidence of road accidents,” Rokosawa said.

Reports of reckless or unsafe driving can be made through LTA’s complaints register via text to 582 or by emailing help@lta.com.fj/complaints@lta.com.fj.
