The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken decisive action by suspending the driving licenses of two individuals who were seen in controversial videos on social media performing dangerous activities that threaten public safety.
According to LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa, such actions reflect a blatant disregard for important road safety measures, traffic regulations, and, most crucially, the value of human life. The authority summoned both individuals for show cause proceedings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000, leading to the suspension of their licenses based on their reckless conduct documented in the videos shared online.
Rokosawa emphasized the significant risks posed by such behavior, stating that while some may find it entertaining, the reality is that these actions endanger lives. He described reckless driving for personal amusement as not just irresponsible but a grave insult to public safety.
The LTA is sending a clear message to all road users: reckless behavior has no place on the roads. In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force and other partners, the LTA is committed to promoting the critical message that every life on the road matters. The responsibility for road safety lies with everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike—ensuring that all can feel secure while traveling.
Rokosawa reiterated that actions that blatantly flout traffic regulations and compromise safety are unacceptable, urging all road users to reflect on their behavior before engaging in actions that might cause harm.
This incident highlights the importance of community responsibility in promoting road safety. By addressing reckless behavior head-on, the LTA and its partners are paving the way for safer roads and a collective commitment to protect every individual’s right to travel safely.
In essence, while the actions of these individuals were dangerous, the Authority’s response serves as a reminder that together, society can work towards making roads safer for everyone.
