The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced plans to bolster enforcement measures aimed at identifying and penalizing road safety violations as the festive season approaches. This initiative is a proactive response to reckless driving incidents, with heightened activities expected to include increased officer presence for spot checks, diligent monitoring of speed limits, and stringent oversight of Public Service Vehicle (PSV) regulations.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa stressed that these actions come in light of a recent road accident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a carrier driver reportedly lost control, leading to injuries of 13 students when the vehicle veered off the road. This incident sheds light on a concerning trend of road accidents, particularly among PSV drivers, according to Rokosawa.

He expressed grave worries over the incident’s implications for passenger safety, particularly for children. The CEO reiterated the crucial need for all drivers, and especially PSV operators, to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic rules consistently. Essential measures include following speed limits and signs, especially in adverse weather conditions that can complicate vehicle handling and visibility.

Rokosawa emphasized the importance of avoiding distractions while driving, noting that actions such as using mobile phones can significantly elevate the risk of accidents. He highlighted that fatigue, carelessness, or inattention can lead to severe, even fatal, consequences.

To drive the point home, the CEO urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly in difficult weather or roadway situations. He specified that drivers who endanger others could face stringent legal ramifications, including fines and potential suspension or revocation of licenses for grave negligence or harm.

Rokosawa declared that road safety is a collective responsibility and that any violation can yield devastating impacts. The LTA is committed to taking a strong stance against behaviors that jeopardize the safety of passengers and other road users. Additionally, he noted the critical importance of preserving the lives of Fijians, urging all drivers to treat road safety as an essential priority.

In summary, the LTA’s enhanced enforcement efforts during the festive season aim to mitigate the risks associated with reckless driving and ensure the safety of all road users. This proactive approach serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility that each driver holds in maintaining road safety.

This initiative reflects a hopeful and committed step towards reducing accidents and improving safety during a traditionally busy time for travel, thus fostering a safer environment for everyone on the road.
