The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced plans to enhance enforcement measures to identify and penalize individuals who violate road safety regulations, particularly during the festive season when the incidence of reckless driving tends to increase. This initiative is a response to a recent serious road accident in Navuniasi, Naitasiri, where a carrier driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, resulting in injuries to 13 students.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the concerning trend of rising road incidents, especially those involving Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers, which underlines the need for greater vigilance on the roads. He emphasized the critical importance of safety for all drivers, especially for PSV operators, reiterating that adherence to traffic regulations is paramount.
The LTA plans to deploy more officers to conduct random spot checks, monitor speed regulations, and ensure that PSVs comply with safety standards. Rokosawa urged drivers to follow essential safety measures, particularly during adverse weather conditions, as these can complicate vehicle operation and reduce visibility.
He stressed that speeding remains a leading cause of road accidents, urging all drivers to respect speed limits and road signs without exception. Additionally, he warned about the dangers of distractions, such as using mobile phones while driving, which significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
The LTA plans to implement strict legal repercussions for those who endanger others on the road, including fines and possible suspension or cancellation of driving licenses in cases of severe negligence. Rokosawa asserted that road safety is a collective responsibility, and breaches of this duty can lead to catastrophic outcomes. He called on all drivers to prioritize safety, as the lives of individuals in Fiji are too valuable to lose to preventable accidents.
This rigorous approach to road safety reflects a commitment to protecting the lives of passengers and other road users, especially during times when traffic is likely to increase. Through strict enforcement and public awareness, there is hope that such measures will lead to safer roads and a decline in accidents.
In summary, the LTA’s initiative aims to enhance road safety by increasing enforcement and awareness, particularly in light of recent accidents involving PSVs. By encouraging safer driving practices, the LTA seeks to protect all road users and foster a culture of responsibility among drivers.
