The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken significant action by revoking the driver’s licenses of eight individuals linked to fatal road accidents. This includes a 21-year-old truck driver, whose license was cancelled for five years following a tragic incident on Princes Road in Tacirua, which resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student.
Irimaia Rokosawa, the LTA’s chief executive officer, stated that the individuals involved were summoned for showcause proceedings in accordance with Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. This particular truck driver was found to be operating with an expired Learners Permit at the time of the accident, underscoring the severe consequences of flouting road regulations.
Rokosawa emphasized that this action serves as a stern warning to all drivers regarding the repercussions of reckless driving. “This is a lesson for all license holders—whether they possess Learners, Provisional, or Full Licenses. It is crucial to follow licensing conditions as failing to do so endangers the lives of all road users,” he remarked. He reiterated LTA’s zero tolerance policy for recklessness on the roads and the swift measures they would take against those who jeopardize safety.
The recent fatal incident has drawn attention to the pressing issue of reckless driving. Mr. Rokosawa conveyed that safe driving is not only an individual responsibility but also a collective social duty. He cautioned that even a moment of negligence can lead to devastating consequences.
In a proactive step, the LTA is collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to enhance measures against repeat traffic offenders and to refine current traffic laws. Mr. Rokosawa mentioned that under Section 268 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009, reckless or negligent driving is a summary offence that may result in up to two years in prison. He affirmed the LTA’s commitment to pursue legal actions against those demonstrating blatant disregard for road safety, particularly highlighting the dangers posed by unlicensed driving.
This license cancellation initiative is part of a larger effort to curb reckless driving, a growing concern given the rise in accidents attributed to speeding, distraction, and negligence. Recent statistics have raised alarms regarding increasing road fatalities, prompting the LTA to take urgent measures.
In light of these events, it is hopeful that the LTA’s decisive actions will not only serve as a deterrent but also foster a culture of road safety awareness among all drivers. The collaboration with law enforcement and ongoing revisions to traffic regulations could pave the way for safer roads in the future, emphasizing the importance of responsibility behind the wheel.
By addressing these issues, the LTA aims to reduce the frequency of tragic accidents and ultimately save lives on the roads.
