LTA Cracks Down on Influencers Promoting Dangerous Driving

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is urging social media influencers and all drivers to stop dangerous driving practices, including using mobile phones and other devices to record while driving. LTA’s Acting Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that these reckless behaviors, often showcased on platforms such as Facebook and TikTok, are illegal and pose serious risks to road safety.

In recent months, the LTA has noted a concerning rise in videos from social media influencers that depict unsafe driving, including recording while behind the wheel. “These videos, which can reach thousands of viewers, unintentionally convey a harmful message that such actions are permissible, which is entirely untrue,” Rokosawa stated. He stressed that participating in these activities is both illegal and irresponsible.

“Sharing videos of reckless driving on social media is not only dangerous but also sets a poor standard for other drivers who may think such behavior is acceptable. We want to emphasize that using mobile phones or other devices while driving is illegal and poses significant dangers,” Rokosawa remarked. He called upon influencers and all drivers to prioritize safety on the roads and eliminate these behaviors immediately.

Rokosawa mentioned that the Authority’s enforcement team is actively monitoring social media to detect and address these risky activities. “The ramifications of these distractions can be devastating. Using electronic devices while driving heightens the risk of accidents and endangers everyone on the road,” he added. He pointed out that speeding, erratic driving, driving under the influence, driver fatigue, improper steering, and other distractions significantly contribute to fatal accidents.

The LTA is set to enhance its enforcement efforts, particularly during the busy travel season following recent incidents and a surge in unsafe driving behaviors. The Acting CEO noted that enforcement personnel would be deployed to high-traffic areas, including popular transport hubs like bus and taxi stands, major roads, and known accident-prone locations.

He affirmed that speed limits and traffic laws will be strictly enforced to detect and discourage reckless and impaired driving. “Our main goal is to ensure the safety of all road users. By amplifying our enforcement efforts, we aim to cultivate a safer driving environment and decrease road accidents,” Rokosawa concluded.

Individuals can report reckless or unsafe driving behaviors through LTA’s complaints register by texting 582 or emailing help@lta.com.fj/complaints@lta.com.fj.
