The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked the driver’s licenses of eight individuals involved in serious accidents, including a 21-year-old truck driver linked to a tragic incident last week on Princes Road in Tacirua that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa reported that the driver had been operating with an expired Learner’s Permit at the time of the incident, leading to a five-year cancellation of his license due to the incident’s severity.

Mr. Rokosawa emphasized the importance of following driving regulations, describing the cancellation of these licenses as a strong message to all drivers regarding the repercussions of reckless behavior on the road. He urged all license holders to respect their licensing conditions, stating that neglecting road safety could endanger the lives of others. “Our authority maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards reckless driving and will take decisive actions against those who risk lives on our roads,” he said.

Following last week’s fatal accident, there are increasing concerns regarding reckless driving practices. Mr. Rokosawa underscored that safe driving is not just a personal duty, but a shared societal responsibility, warning that a single moment of carelessness can lead to irreversible damage.

To address these concerns, the LTA is working closely with the Fiji Police Force to enhance measures against repeated traffic offenders and to revise existing traffic regulations. Under Section 268 (a) of the Crimes Act 2009, reckless driving is classified as a summary offence, which could result in up to two years of imprisonment.

“We will continue formal proceedings against drivers who show a blatant disregard for road safety. It is alarming to witness fatal incidents involving drivers operating without valid licenses,” Mr. Rokosawa added. The revocation of these licenses reflects a broader initiative aimed at reducing reckless driving, which has been associated with an increase in accidents related to speeding and negligence. Recent data have highlighted a troubling rise in road fatalities, necessitating immediate action from the LTA.

In conclusion, while the recent fatalities are deeply concerning, the LTA’s strict measures signal a commitment to improving road safety and holding negligent drivers accountable. Through collaboration with law enforcement and adherence to regulations, there is hope for a safer driving environment in the future.
