Low-Cost Housing Project Nearing Completion.

Twelve out of the 36 flats at the Lagilagi Housing Estate project in Suva are in the final stages of completion and are expected to open at the end of the month.

Public Rental Board’s general manager Timoci Naleba stated that the project is now 71 percent complete.

Naleba explained that legal issues concerning the land title had slowed down the project’s progress.

“We’ve seen progress, particularly in the Lagilagi project,” said Naleba.

“This project was given to us. It is almost complete, and we are in the final stages of building completion.

“There were some legal implications from the past, but we managed to transfer the land legally. This had impacted the project’s progress, but overall, it is now 71 percent complete, and we hope to have 12 flats opened before the beginning of August.”

The project was initiated by the People’s Community Network Charitable Trust with the goal of designing and constructing low-cost housing units.

The Trust received $12.7 million from the Government to facilitate the project, but construction did not meet expectations.

Initially, 44 units were completed in 2015. In 2017, an additional 76 units were planned, but only 40 were finished.

Once the remaining 36 units are completed, families from the nearby Jittu Estate are expected to benefit from them.
