Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a married couple who teach at the University of the South Pacific, celebrated a significant milestone during last Friday’s graduation ceremony in Suva. Mr. Kumar, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.
The couple, who have been married for seven years, demonstrated their belief in lifelong learning by pursuing their academic goals together. Mr. Kumar acknowledged the balance they maintained in their household, stating that his wife took on most of the domestic responsibilities to give him time to focus on his studies.
The couple completed their studies online, presenting challenges in managing both work and education, but they found the effort worthwhile. They both teach English at Seaqaqa Central College.
Mr. Kumar faced criticism for his decision to study law after obtaining previous degrees in Literature, Language, and Geography. He expressed that despite negative comments regarding his age and study choices, he remained focused on his dream of becoming a lawyer.
Originally, he pursued an education degree due to a lack of scholarships for law studies. Once he began earning a salary as a teacher, he was able to enroll in law school.
Now, Mr. Kumar plans to pursue a master’s degree in law, while Ms. Lata intends to move to Dubai for teaching opportunities. His ambition is to become a criminal lawyer.
