Love and Learning: A Couple’s Graduation Journey Against All Odds

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, both educators at the University of the South Pacific, celebrated a remarkable achievement during their graduation ceremony in Suva last Friday. Shalvin, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Sheema, 26, received her Master of Arts in Education.

The couple, married for seven years, exemplifies the idea that education is a lifelong journey. Shalvin shared that they have managed their roles effectively, both teaching at the same institution. He acknowledged the significant contribution Sheema made to their household, allowing him the necessary time to focus on his legal studies.

Despite the challenges of online learning and balancing work with their academic pursuits, Shalvin stated that the effort was worthwhile. The couple remained steadfast in their commitment to achieving their goals, despite facing numerous obstacles along the way.

Both teach English at Seaqaqa Central College. Shalvin mentioned encountering skepticism regarding his decision to pursue law studies, particularly since he already held a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education. Having initially majored in Literature Language and Geography, he expressed that his dream of becoming a lawyer was sidelined due to the lack of available scholarships at the time.

After graduating as a teacher, Shalvin quickly embarked on his law degree. He faced criticism for shifting his focus but chose to ignore the negativity and follow his aspirations. His graduation in law signifies that dedication and passion can lead to success.

Looking ahead, Shalvin plans to pursue a master’s degree in law, while Sheema aims to relocate to Dubai for a teaching opportunity. Shalvin has set his sights on becoming a criminal lawyer.
