Looming Danger: A Rise in Road Fatalities

Road fatalities in Fiji have been increasing, according to Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma.

During his contribution to the budget debate this week, Sharma reported there were 44 cases in 2022, 78 in 2023, and 24 in 2024.

“There is a great urgency to combat this issue,” Sharma stated.

He mentioned discussing with the Minister for Public Works and Transport the need for more speed cameras to detect speeding, mobile phone usage, seatbelt compliance, and red-light violations.

“This will penalize those who commit these offences,” he explained.

Sharma also emphasized the need to reevaluate how new driver’s licenses are issued, expressing concern over the loss of lives on the roads.
