Lomaivuna Primary School’s involvement in the Get Into Rugby Festival this past week has been hailed as an invaluable experience by the team’s coach, Maca Kaloudonuvuruna. The school, located in Naitasiri, participated in this one-day event held at Bidesi Park in Laucala Bay, Suva, with the primary objective of exposing young players to the sport.
Kaloudonuvuruna explained that the key aim of their participation was to provide the students with the opportunity to engage with rugby, something they often admire from afar during larger tournaments, like the sevens and 15-a-side competitions.
The team embraced the principles represented by the acronym DRIPS, which stands for discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity. These values reflect the GIR Plus initiative’s holistic approach to promoting sports in schools.
In addition to the festival, Kaloudonuvuruna shared insights into their training regimen. Since most team members are also in her class, training has been seamless and consistent. “Whenever we have class time, I make it a point to train with them, utilizing every opportunity to practice,” she noted, highlighting their commitment to daily training sessions.
This emphasis on exposure and structured training not only enhances the students’ skills but also lays a strong foundation for their future in sports.
Overall, the experience at the festival signifies a promising start for these young athletes, providing them with essential exposure and motivation to keep pursuing their passion for rugby. As they continue to develop their skills and understanding of the game, the Lomaivuna Primary team is poised for growth and success in the future.
