The recent participation of Lomaivuna Primary School in the Get Into Rugby Festival has proven to be a significant learning experience for the young athletes, according to their coach, Maca Kaloudonuvuruna. The Naitasiri team traveled to Bidesi Park in Laucala Bay, Suva, for this one-day event focused on introducing students to the sport of rugby.
Kaloudonuvuruna highlighted that the primary objective of their participation was to provide exposure to the students, many of whom often watch major tournaments like sevens and 15s but don’t have the opportunity to play at such events. Her aim is to create a platform that encourages young talent to explore and engage with rugby actively.
The team adopted the acronym DRIPS—standing for discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity—as a guiding principle during their festival participation. These values reflect the intentions of the GIR Plus initiative in promoting a holistic approach to sports in schools.
Kaloudonuvuruna also shared insights into their training routines, noting that all team members are in her class, allowing for regular practice sessions. She emphasized the importance of utilizing any available time for training, which includes morning sessions whenever possible. This consistent training schedule has contributed positively to their preparation for the festival.
The enthusiasm and commitment from both the coach and the players show a promising future for rugby at Lomaivuna Primary School. Events like these not only enhance the children’s skills and abilities in rugby but also foster important life values that will serve them well both on and off the field.
Overall, the opportunity for the young players to showcase their talent at the festival suggests a bright future for their involvement in grassroots rugby and the potential for developing lifelong skills through sports.
