President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on the paramount chief of Naitasiri, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take firm measures to shield his community from the escalating illicit drug crisis. During the opening of the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting at Tamavua Village in Suva, he expressed his worries about the rising drug use in the nation.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts for the improvement of the province, urging local leaders, youths, and the community to work together to tackle social problems plaguing society. He shared his observations regarding the harmful impact of drugs on youth and expressed his deep concern for both current and future generations, calling for unity among the vanua and churches to safeguard their children.
He stressed the need to reinforce cultural values and respect within families and the community, highlighting the importance of teaching children to honor their elders. Ratu Wiliame also encouraged young individuals who have left school to pursue technical education, which would help them address social challenges and contribute positively to community development.
“We must take responsibility and confront this issue ourselves, rather than blaming others,” he stated. He advocated for the creation of a detailed village profile initiative that would enable the government to provide targeted support to the people of Naitasiri.
Additionally, he urged the community to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by adopting healthier dietary practices. Noting that the Ministry of Health reported 80 percent of deaths result from NCDs, he prompted residents to consider what actions they could take as a province to remedy this situation. Ratu Wiliame concluded by highlighting the importance of returning to traditional eating habits, urging everyone to consume food they grow themselves.
