Fiji has made significant strides in cardiac care with the introduction of heart bypass surgeries at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH). This local initiative enables Fijians to save over $25,000 compared to the costs of traveling abroad for surgery, previously a necessity for many in need of such procedures.

Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old from Lautoka, became the first patient to undergo open-heart surgery at PSH, successfully completing a four-hour operation. Ms. Lata had initially been advised to seek treatment in India, with estimated expenses of approximately FJ$54,000. Fortunately, she discovered that her procedure could be performed at PSH for significantly less.

Parvish Kumar, the founder and CEO of PSH, highlighted that this groundbreaking service is a transformative milestone for healthcare in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. He emphasized the commitment of the surgical team in providing world-class cardiac care locally, allowing patients to be near their families while benefiting from considerable cost savings.

The highly trained surgical team at PSH boasts experience from esteemed international healthcare institutions, ensuring that they maintain high standards of clinical excellence. The successful establishment of open-heart surgeries at PSH is the result of 15 months of planning, investment in modern technology, and collaborative efforts among medical professionals.

Mr. Kumar, who previously lectured at the Fiji School of Medicine, referred to this development as a “beacon of hope” for those with cardiac concerns in the Pacific. The hospital has implemented thorough pre- and post-operative protocols aimed at achieving a 100% success rate, with Fijian nurses playing an integral role in patient care during the surgical process.

The launch of cardiac surgery services at PSH not only enhances access to life-saving interventions but also fosters a sense of community and support, which is crucial for recovery. This initiative embodies the positive advancements in healthcare that can emerge from local investments and expertise, benefiting the entire region.

In summary, PSH’s new heart surgery program represents a significant leap forward in healthcare accessibility for Fijians, showcasing the dedication of local medical professionals and the potential for improved health outcomes in the Pacific.
