Fijians requiring heart bypass surgeries can now significantly reduce their expenses by more than $25,000 through local procedures at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), which has recently introduced this service in Fiji. This initiative aims to provide advanced cardiac care locally, eliminating the need for expensive overseas travel.
Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old resident of Lautoka, became the first patient to undergo open-heart surgery at PSH, successfully completing a four-hour operation on Monday. Initially, Ms. Lata was advised by Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital to seek treatment in India, facing costs around FJ$54,000. Fortunately, she discovered that the procedure at PSH would cost her less than a quarter of that amount.
Parvish Kumar, the founder and CEO of PSH, noted that the offering of local cardiac surgeries represents a pivotal advancement in healthcare for both Fiji and the Pacific region. He emphasized the commitment and expertise of his surgical team, allowing patients to receive world-class cardiac care in a familiar environment, supported by their loved ones, and at much lower costs.
PSH’s experienced surgical team, trained in leading international healthcare institutions, upholds high clinical standards. Kumar explained that bringing Fiji’s first open-heart surgery to PSH was the result of 15 months of meticulous planning, investment in state-of-the-art technology, and collaboration among medical teams.
Highlighting the importance of this development, Kumar referred to it as a “beacon of hope” for cardiac patients throughout the Pacific region. The program is designed to achieve 100% success rates, supported by comprehensive pre- and post-operative protocols that incorporate Fijian nurses as integral parts of the surgical process.
Proudly, Kumar stated, “Our Fijian nurses performed excellently, providing comprehensive care throughout the surgery process,” underlining the hospital’s commitment to enhancing accessibility to cardiac healthcare.
This new service not only makes essential medical procedures more accessible for Fijians but also enhances the overall healthcare landscape in the region, allowing patients to receive quality treatment close to home. There is a hopeful perspective that this initiative will inspire improvements and advancements in other areas of healthcare across the Pacific, ultimately benefiting many more individuals in need of critical medical assistance.
