The Miss Hibiscus Festival made an exciting comeback this year after a five-year hiatus, offering numerous marketing opportunities for local businesses.
A notable participant was GMJ’s Catering and Services, a family-run enterprise that took advantage of this event to promote its goal of fostering young entrepreneurship. The business distinguished itself by featuring traditional, authentic cuisine that stood out from the other offerings at Hibiscus Village along the Suva waterfront.
Their distinctive approach underscored their commitment to cultural heritage and the development of future business leaders. Fane Vereivalu, co-owner of GMJ’s Catering and Services, expressed that they had been eagerly awaiting the chance to participate in the Hibiscus Festival for years.
With the backing of family and friends, Ms. Vereivalu shared that they aimed to create something unique for the public, which led to the launch of their “Traditional Authentic Food” concept. “We wanted to provide something different this year, as the Hibiscus Festival attracts individuals from all backgrounds,” she stated.
They also involved their children, nephews, and nieces in their efforts, aiming to teach them the lessons passed down through generations about earning through traditional food during the two-week holiday.
Ms. Vereivalu emphasized that their family business is set apart by its unique flavors and affordable prices. Originally from Nukunuku Lakeba in Lau, she was driven to take part in this year’s festival.
