Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the penalty for littering is set at $40, regardless of the item being dumped, such as a car, fridge, or even a plastic bag. During a speech in Parliament, Rabuka indicated that the Government is in the process of reviewing and modifying the Litter Act of 2008.

He mentioned that if a corporate entity is found guilty of littering, the fine would be $2,000, regardless of the type and quantity of waste disposed of. Rabuka noted that this penalty is inadequate for serious environmental violations, and highlighted that the current Litter Act provides a vague definition of public places, making the enforcement boundaries unclear.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that the Ministry of Environment is actively working to improve enforcement, which he identified as a key issue. He emphasized that the challenge lies not within the Act itself, but in its enforcement. Rabuka acknowledged the gaps present in the Litter Act of 2008 and its 2010 amendment, calling for enhanced enforcement and implementation through the ongoing review.
