Life-Saving Upgrades: Yalobi’s New Evacuation Center Opens

The enhanced risk-informed evacuation center was inaugurated for the residents of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa, on Wednesday, providing shelter for over 200 people in the event of future disasters.

This facility was constructed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project (Gov4Res) at a cost exceeding FJ$60,000.

The center is designed to address various risks faced by vulnerable groups in the Yalobi community, featuring accessibility ramps for individuals with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting.

These enhancements are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities during natural disasters.

At the inauguration, Yalobi residents recalled their harrowing experience during Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to trek uphill for three hours to reach safety in caves above the village. In more recent disasters, villagers sought refuge in their homes due to the absence of proper evacuation facilities. They expressed gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this timely support, believing it will enhance their safety and well-being.

Jovesa Vocea, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of risk-informed rural and maritime developments for long-term resilience. He stated that the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre exemplifies the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring all development initiatives are aligned with risk management strategies.

Vocea remarked, “The Yalobi Evacuation Centre is a lifeline for the residents of this village, not merely a building.” He added that beyond serving as an evacuation site, the center would function as a hub for community initiatives aimed at empowering women and youth.

The center will also host various socio-economic activities to uplift the Yalobi community. Nicola Glendining, Project Manager for the UNDP Pacific Gov4Res, expressed pride in continuing the collaboration with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management to bolster the resilience of rural communities in Fiji.
