Levuka Fire Station Reopens with $400K Upgrades for Safety and Heritage

In a major initiative to boost fire safety and emergency response capabilities, the Levuka Fire Station has completed a $400,000 renovation and was officially recommissioned last Thursday.

Puamau Sowane, CEO of the National Fire Authority (NFA), emphasized the importance of this upgrade due to the historical value of many local buildings, some of which exceed 100 years in age and are recognized by UNESCO’s world heritage program. He noted that the outdated condition of these structures posed significant risks, highlighting an urgent need for increased government funding and collaboration from community stakeholders to invest in Levuka’s heritage and security.

Sowane also stated that a Public-Private Partnership is crucial for the ongoing protection of the historic town and its residents, adding that the recommissioning of the fire station exemplifies NFA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the people of Levuka.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa addressed concerns raised by fire station employees during a prior visit, indicating the challenges they faced with the aging facility. He brought these issues to Sowane’s attention, who took prompt action to resolve them.

The Levuka Fire Station, which first opened on March 30, 2006, has changed locations several times throughout its history, including sites on Hennings Lane, Church Lane, and Butcher Lane, before settling at its current location on The Beach Road.

The extensive refurbishment, which cost approximately $400,000, included repainting the building, installing new roller shutter doors, expanding the STO Office, adding a new conference and meeting room, and increasing the dormitory capacity from four to eight beds, complete with new lockers, air conditioning, and a modern kitchen. Additionally, a new septic tank was installed to enhance hygiene and accommodate future expansion.

Levuka is home to a population of around 10,000 residents.
