Levuka Fire Station Reimagined: A $400K Commitment to Safety and Heritage

The Levuka Fire Station has received a significant $400,000 upgrade aimed at improving fire safety and emergency response, officially recommissioned last Thursday. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane emphasized the importance of this upgrade, especially considering the historical value of Levuka’s buildings, many of which exceed 100 years in age and are recognized under UNESCO’s world heritage program.

Sowane pointed out that the condition of these historic buildings posed considerable risks, highlighting the urgent need for increased government funding and support from various stakeholders to protect Levuka’s heritage and enhance safety measures. He stressed that a Public Private Partnership is vital for the sustained protection of both the town and its residents.

During the recommissioning event, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa recalled discussions with employees about the challenges posed by their old facility. He noted that he relayed these concerns to Sowane, who acted promptly to address the issues.

Originally opened on March 30, 2006, the Levuka Fire Station has moved locations multiple times, previously situated on Hennings Lane, Church Lane, and Butcher Lane. The station is now permanently established on The Beach Road. The recent refurbishment included repainting, new roller shutter doors, the expansion of the STO Office, the addition of a conference/meeting room, an increase in dormitory space from 4 to 8 beds, new lockers, air conditioning, and a modern kitchen. Moreover, a new septic tank was installed to enhance hygiene and facilitate future expansion.

Levuka’s population is approximately 10,000 residents.
