Lessons of Life: A Son’s Tribute to His Father’s Legacy

A father’s impact can significantly shape one’s character, impart values, and inspire aspirations. Raahyl Nair, a 24-year-old civil engineering graduate from the University of the South Pacific, has personally experienced this influence and credits his achievements to his late father.

Originally from Tavua and raised in Suva, Raahyl’s journey showcases a blend of personal challenges and professional successes. “I grew up in a typical Indian household,” he shared, noting the strict nature of Indian parents. Raahyl’s passion for soccer was met with support from his mother, who prioritized his education, while his father encouraged him to enjoy life and seize opportunities.

“My father urged me to go out and play, to follow my passions. He taught me that the most important aspect of life is to enjoy it.” This balanced parenting style instilled a lasting appreciation for both hard work and enjoyment in Raahyl.

His educational journey began at Nasinu Gospel Primary School, followed by Rishikul Primary School and Rishikul College. Initially interested in aviation and automotive fields, Raahyl’s career path shifted towards civil engineering, inspired by his father’s profession in the Ministry of Agriculture. Visits to his father’s workplace allowed him to meet civil engineers who encouraged him to explore this field as it had fewer participants at the time.

Although Raahyl dreamed of becoming a pilot, his plans changed when he received a National Toppers Scholarship that did not support aviation studies. Motivated by his father and influenced by his father’s colleagues, he opted for a degree in civil engineering. Tragically, during his first university year, Raahyl lost his father, which led to increased responsibilities at home. He had to manage household matters, support his mother, and run the family’s taxi business while continuing his studies.

These challenges compelled him to grow up quickly. “I was never involved in these matters before, but the journey taught me valuable lessons about life and time management. I’ve realized that education is a lifelong process,” he remarked.

Today, as the field of civil engineering becomes more saturated, Raahyl advises future students to fully embrace the profession. “My advice is to pursue your passion and always remember those who raised you.” Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the necessity of education and staying updated with new technologies.

Raahyl’s journey has been about gaining knowledge while adapting to life’s hurdles. Looking toward the future, he maintains an open perspective, recognizing the uncertainties that await. “We’ll see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I’ll continue building the life my parents envisioned for me.”
