The Attorney-General Graham Leung has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Mr. Rabuku’s departure from his previous role as acting DPP just five weeks prior. Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva made the appointment public on Wednesday.
Last month, Attorney-General Leung urged Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed his appointment as ‘ineligible.’ Leung emphasized that the Constitution grants the DPP the authority to appoint their own staff, highlighting that these decisions are solely within the DPP’s jurisdiction rather than the Judicial Services Commission or his office.
He also pointed out that it is not guaranteed that the deputy would automatically take over if the acting DPP goes on leave.
