The Attorney-General, Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s departure from his previous role as acting DPP just five weeks prior. Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva made the official announcement of Rabuku’s appointment on Wednesday.
Leung had previously requested Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed his appointment as ‘ineligible.’ He emphasized that the DPP has the constitutional authority to appoint their own staff, stating that such decisions are made solely by the DPP or the acting DPP without the need for approval or consultation with the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
Moreover, Leung mentioned that it is not automatically assumed that the deputy DPP will take over responsibilities if the acting DPP is on leave.
