Attorney-General Graham Leung has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s return to a new role five weeks after he stepped down from his acting DPP position. The acting DPP, Nancy Tikoisuva, revealed Mr. Rabuku’s new appointment on Wednesday.
Last month, Mr. Leung had requested Mr. Rabuku to leave the acting DPP role after the Supreme Court deemed his prior appointment as ‘ineligible.’ Leung stated, “Under the Constitution, the DPP is empowered to appoint his/her own staff.” He emphasized that such decisions are solely made by the DPP or the individual acting in that capacity, without the need for input from the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
Additionally, Mr. Leung mentioned that if the acting DPP takes leave, it does not automatically mean that the deputy will take over those responsibilities.
