The Attorney-General, Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s departure from the acting DPP role just five weeks prior. The acting DPP, Nancy Tikoisuva, made the official announcement on Wednesday.
Last month, Attorney-General Leung advised Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court ruled him as “ineligible.” Leung emphasized that the Constitution grants the DPP the authority to appoint their own staff, stating that such decisions should be made solely by the DPP or their acting replacement, and do not require the approval of the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
He also noted that if the acting DPP were to take leave, it does not automatically imply that the deputy would take over her responsibilities.
