The Attorney-General, Graham Leung, has confirmed the appointment of John Rabuku as the new deputy Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). This announcement follows Rabuku’s recent departure from his role as acting DPP five weeks prior. Acting DPP Nancy Tikoisuva made the official announcement on Wednesday.
Leung had previously requested Rabuku to step down from the acting DPP position after the Supreme Court deemed him ‘ineligible’ for the role. He emphasized that the Constitution grants the DPP the authority to appoint their own staff, asserting that such decisions are solely within the DPP’s purview or that of the person temporarily filling the position, rather than the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General.
Furthermore, Leung pointed out that it’s not guaranteed that the deputy DPP would take over if the acting DPP were to take leave.
