Surendra Lal, a notable figure, has stated that Fijians of Indian descent in Labasa were targeted during the coups. During a consultation session with the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee in Labasa, Mr. Lal highlighted that these individuals faced threats and mistreatment, leading to a lack of trust in the country’s disciplined forces.
He noted that canefarmers were particularly affected in the 1987 coups, being forcibly taken from town and made to walk barefoot to detention camps. Mr. Lal expressed that those affected deserve an official apology for their experiences during these events and pointed out the absence of any acknowledgment from authorities regarding the need for reconciliation with the victims of the coups.
In response, Sashi Kiran, chairperson of the steering committee, clarified that the commission aims to listen to the grievances of all ethnic groups within the country rather than focusing on one specific race. She emphasized that individuals from all backgrounds would have the opportunity to voice their concerns, stating that the commission would consider a broad array of issues. Ms. Kiran underscored that the overarching goal is national reconciliation, rather than addressing individual experiences.
