The Fiji Performing Rights Association (FPRA) has made a significant gesture by presenting a cheque for $3,600 to Seini Gaunavou-Uluiviti, the daughter of the late composer Yaminiasi Gaunavou. This contribution recognizes the impact of his song “Era Bini Tu,” which was recently performed at the International Small Island Developing States (SIDS) conference by a youth orchestra from Antigua and Barbuda.
Eremasi Tamanisau, the chairman of FPRA, explained that the organization was approached by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the government’s request to use the song at the conference. Given that FPRA administers the rights to the song, it was noted that Kabani, an Australia-based band of Fijian musicians, had previously performed it. The late Yaminiasi Gaunavou had assigned the rights to all his compositions to FPRA, ensuring they manage and license his works, including “Era Bini Tu.”
The song was played for a duration of 31 seconds during the conference, which was streamed live on UN TV. The fee for using the song’s synchronization rights was set at $1,000 for every 30 seconds, totaling $2,000 (approximately $4,403.35 Fijian) for this performance. Following standard practices, 10% of the fee was retained by FPRA for administrative costs, with the rest being passed on to Ms. Gaunavou-Uluiviti.
In expressing her gratitude, Ms. Gaunavou-Uluiviti acknowledged FPRA’s role in preserving her father’s legacy and promoting his music on an international platform. “It’s an honor to receive this cheque on behalf of my late father,” she stated, highlighting that his songs are now recognized worldwide. She also emphasized that this achievement serves as motivation for young composers to pursue their craft.
This event not only honors the memory of Yaminiasi Gaunavou but also showcases the enduring influence of Fijian music on a global scale. It serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting local artists and preserving their legacies for future generations.
