Legacy and Resilience: Suliana Sandys Preserves Levuka’s Heritage Against the Odds

The article highlights the rich history of Suliana Sandys and her family, notably her great-great-grandfather, Frederick Vollmer, a pivotal figure in Levuka’s early history and the town’s mayor in 1912. Frederick Vollmer, who originally came from Germany, registered the Lomaloma House in 1876, marking it as an enduring symbol of colonial architecture and resilience in Levuka.

Frederick married Adi Pasemaca Yalikiwai and together they had a son, Rudolph, who carried forward the family’s legacy. Suliana, now the fourth-generation resident of Lomaloma House, inherited not just the property but a deep connection to Levuka’s history and community values, which were instilled in her by her mother, Melaia Vollmer.

Through her career as a teacher and later as a town councillor, Suliana contributed significantly to education and community leadership. Her tenure as CEO of the Levuka Town Council from 2012 to 2015 saw her advocate for the town’s heritage preservation. Levuka was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013, a recognition of its historical and cultural significance.

However, the challenges have persisted, especially with the devastation brought by Cyclone Winston in 2016, which destroyed five historic buildings and damaged many others. Despite these setbacks, Suliana is optimistic about the future of Levuka’s heritage. She emphasizes the need for community cooperation and government support to maintain and restore Levuka’s historic assets.

Recent restoration efforts, including the reopening of the Ovalau Club, symbolize the community’s resilience and determination. Although the threat of climate change looms, particularly regarding infrastructure maintenance, Suliana remains hopeful that Levuka’s unique colonial buildings will endure, preserving their legacy for future generations.

Suliana’s story is a poignant reminder that individual and communal resilience can thrive amid adversity. Levuka’s history is not only preserved through its structures but also through the people dedicated to keeping its heritage alive. This commitment to cultural identity and community spirit showcases a hopeful narrative for Levuka’s future.
