The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a crucial notice to 14,661 tenants who currently have lease arrears amounting to a substantial $16.7 million. The Board is urging tenants to address these outstanding payments immediately to prevent possible legal actions.

Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services for TLTB, stressed the necessity of settling these dues swiftly. Timely payments are essential, he explained, to ensure there are no delays in disbursing payments to landowners.

“We are committed to collaborating with our tenants to find solutions, but it is vital that arrears are cleared to avoid further legal actions,” Tuwai noted. He reminded tenants of their obligation to make rental and administration fee payments in full by the start of January and July each year as outlined in their lease agreements. By doing so, it helps to mitigate potential legal issues and allows the Board to distribute lease revenues to landowners promptly.

Tenants who fall under any specific categories are encouraged to visit TLTB offices and connect with the arrears recovery teams, as part payments may be accepted under certain conditions. Furthermore, Tuwai advised tenants to consider seeking financial assistance from commercial banks, indicating that TLTB has made necessary arrangements to facilitate this.

He strongly emphasized the importance of clearing outstanding payments to avoid regrets. All inquiries can be directed to the mobile number 990 8959.

The Board’s notice includes several key points: landowners are currently missing out on lease revenue that is rightfully theirs, tenants are urged to remedy their outstanding payments urgently, and failure to settle arrears by November 30, 2024, will result in publishing tenants’ names in the media and potential legal actions, including lease cancellations and property loss.

In conclusion, this reminder serves as a critical appeal for tenants to take action and fulfill their lease obligations. Resolving these issues can not only protect the interests of the landowners but also offer tenants peace of mind by maintaining their occupancy rights without facing legal repercussions. It underscores the importance of communication between tenants and the Board, and with cooperation, a more positive resolution can be achieved for all involved.
