The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final alert to 14,661 tenants who currently have unpaid lease arrears, amounting to a substantial total of $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to settle their debts promptly to prevent potential legal actions.

Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, underscored the need for tenants to address these outstanding payments at the earliest to ensure that landowners receive their lease payments on time. He emphasized, “We are committed to working with our tenants to find solutions, but it is crucial that arrears are cleared to avoid further legal actions.”

Tenants were reminded of their responsibility to pay lease rental and administrative fees on the 1st of January and July each year as per their lease agreements. Tuwai stated that settling these payments helps avoid litigation and facilitates timely distribution of lease proceeds to landowners.

The Board has encouraged tenants with arrears to engage with their debt recovery team and explore options, including part payments, while also advising them to seek financial assistance from commercial banks if necessary.

To avoid severe consequences, tenants are urged to act quickly in clearing their debts. The Board reiterated that if the outstanding amounts are not paid by November 30, 2024, it may have no other choice than to publish the names of delinquent tenants in local media, which could lead to legal proceedings, cancellation of leases, and potential loss of property.

It’s important for tenants to recognize that resolving these debts not only benefits themselves but also supports the livelihoods of landowners who rely on this revenue.

For assistance and inquiries, tenants are directed to contact TLTB at mobile number 990 8959.

Summary: TLTB urges over 14,000 tenants to settle $16.7 million in lease arrears to avoid legal action and support landowners. The Board offers options for repayment and stresses the importance of timely payments to prevent litigation.

This situation highlights an important aspect of tenant-landlord dynamics, where a timely communication and cooperative approach can lead to mutually beneficial solutions. It is optimistic to see TLTB reaching out to tenants for collaboration rather than immediate punitive actions, showing a willingness to work together during challenging times.
