At a poignant memorial marking the 24th anniversary of the attempted mutiny at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Aporosa Rokowaqa, the brother of the late soldier Lagani Rokowaqa, called on senior officers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to embody integrity and dignity in their leadership roles.
In his address on behalf of the Rokowaqa family, Mr. Rokowaqa emphasized that true change within the military institution starts with its leaders. He quoted Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, urging officers to uphold God’s commandments and prioritize the well-being of Fiji and future generations over personal interests.
Additionally, he expressed a heartfelt plea for forgiveness from the RFMF, acknowledging Lagani’s involvement in the 2000 mutiny. He spoke candidly about the challenges and grief his family endured at that time, highlighting the emotional toll it took as they welcomed new life while grieving past choices.
Mr. Rokowaqa’s words serve as a reminder that integrity, leadership, and forgiveness can pave the way for healing and progress within the military and broader societal context. His family’s journey reflects resilience and hope, embodying the message of reconciliation that the commemorative event aimed to promote.
Through this reflection, there exists a hopeful outlook for the future, where lessons from the past can foster stronger community ties and create a more unified path forward for the Republic of Fiji.
