Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci, the Tui Nadi, has stepped down as president of the People’s Alliance party. He announced his resignation during the party’s executive council meeting last week.
At 70 years old, Ratu Vuniyani cited two primary reasons for his departure. He stated, “First, I have achieved what I had committed to in the formation of the party,” referring to the successful effort to defeat the FijiFirst party, which he considers a significant accomplishment during his leadership.
Additionally, he mentioned the importance of prioritizing his health and life, indicating that he no longer wishes to juggle the pressures of both the presidency and his chiefs’ responsibilities in Nadi. “I chose to focus on one which is the role of the Tui Nadi. This is the right time to pass this baton to someone else to continue,” he explained. He also addressed rumors suggesting disagreements over certain procedures, labeling them as misinformation.
In his farewell, he expressed gratitude to the party, its members, and all his supporters. The party’s vice-president, Ratu Josefa Dimuri, will assume the role of acting president following his resignation.
