Leadership Crisis: Calls for USP President’s Resignation Intensify

The Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of the South Pacific (USP), Professor Pal Ahluwalia, is currently facing significant controversy as staff unions are demanding his resignation. The University of the South Pacific Staff Union (USPSU) and the President of the University Association of USP Staff (AUSPS) are protesting at USP’s Laucala Campus, calling for Ahluwalia’s immediate removal.

The unions contend that his leadership has been inadequate and are urging the university’s Special Council to investigate management and human resources issues that have arisen during his tenure. This situation is particularly notable, as many staff members had previously supported Ahluwalia’s return to Fiji after he was controversially deported by the prior government. The initial support has now transformed into frustration and dissatisfaction.

A primary concern for the unions is the dismissal of biologist and former AUSPS president Dr. Tamara Osborne-Naikatini, who was terminated in July following an interview that Ahluwalia deemed a violation of contract confidentiality, leading to claims of “gross misconduct.”

Classes have been disrupted by the strike, leaving some students confused as they entered empty classrooms, unaware of the ongoing protests. Adding to the unrest, the unions have criticized reports indicating that Professor Ahluwalia is currently abroad on holiday amidst this crisis, further raising questions about his leadership.

Government ministers have notably refrained from commenting on the situation. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has not responded to inquiries, while Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh has also remained silent. This lack of communication has prompted questions regarding the government’s stance on the escalating issues at the university.

As USP navigates staff dissatisfaction and operational challenges, many are observing how the management will tackle these serious allegations and work towards restoring stability to the prominent educational institution in the region.
