The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Joel Abraham. Joining the FCCC in 2013, Abraham has been at the helm as CEO since 2016, during which he has been recognized as a transformative leader with a strong commitment to establishing a regulatory framework in Fiji and the Asia-Pacific region.
Under his leadership, the FCCC has focused on consumer protection, ensuring fairness and integrity within the marketplace. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communication, Manoa Kamikamica, praised Abraham’s commitment, stating that consumers are better protected due to his efforts.
Abraham reflected on his 13 years with the FCCC, expressing a mixture of emotions about his decision to step down, calling the organization a “family” and affirming his confidence in the capable hands he leaves it with. He believes the investments made in the staff will continue to yield positive results in protecting consumers.
His dedication to serving the people of Fiji was emphasized, as he noted the importance of building systems that uphold consumer trust. Abraham will now assume a regional role, aiming to extend his excellence in regulatory practices across the Asia-Pacific. He reassured that this is not a farewell but a new chapter in collaboration that aligns with their shared mission.
In summary, Joel Abraham leaves a legacy of enhanced consumer rights and protection in Fiji, setting a strong foundation for future FCCC endeavors. His transition to a regional role opens new opportunities for continued collaboration and impact in the sector.
This leadership change at FCCC creates an opportunity for fresh ideas and perspectives, which can further strengthen consumer protection efforts in Fiji and the wider region.
