Attorney-General Graham Leung recently expressed his concerns regarding the legal profession during the Fiji Law Society Convention 2024 held at the Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa in Wailoaloa. Speaking to a gathering of lawyers, he highlighted the possibility that there are an excessive number of lawyers, many of whom may not possess the necessary skills for the profession.
Mr. Leung commented that some individuals might be drawn to a legal career due to misconceptions about its glamour or the financial rewards it may offer. He urged senior lawyers to take an active role in mentoring and guiding younger lawyers, who statistically make up a larger portion of the legal community today. He emphasized that seasoned practitioners should play a vital role in ensuring that newcomers are adequately prepared to tackle the complexities and challenges they will encounter in their careers.
He pointed out that many young lawyers find themselves outside the traditional paths of the legal profession and struggle to establish their footing in a competitive landscape. Mr. Leung asserted that law firms have a moral obligation to support and nurture this emerging talent. He underlined the importance of understanding the core values of the profession to effectively address the various challenges that Fiji faces.
The dialogue initiated by Mr. Leung could serve as a catalyst for positive change within the legal profession, promoting a collaborative environment where experienced lawyers actively contribute to the development of newer practitioners. This is crucial not only for the growth of these individuals but also for the overall integrity and effectiveness of the legal system in Fiji.
In summary, Mr. Leung’s comments shed light on the necessity for mentorship and support within the legal community, reminding both senior and junior lawyers of their shared responsibilities to advance the profession and meet future challenges comprehensively.
