The CEO of Lautoka City Council, Mohammed Anees Khan, has announced that the council is actively collaborating with local police to address the drug issues plaguing the city. During a recent presentation on the council’s annual reports for 2015-2017 to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Khan explained that discussions have taken place with the police IT department to identify and map out drug hotspots using geographic information system (GIS) technology.

In response to a question from committee member Ioane Naivalurua about drug eradication plans, Khan revealed that police have pinpointed both existing and new suburban drug hotspots in Lautoka. He noted the importance of enhancing surveillance in these areas, mentioning that police are working to install additional cameras where they are needed most.

Khan also highlighted ongoing efforts for daily police patrols and mentioned that the council has offered two of its facilities, one at Shirley Park and another at the Lautoka market, to be used as police posts. Furthermore, a third hotspot has been identified where the council plans to establish a mini police station, contingent on police assurances of officer presence at the site before any resources are allocated for construction.

Khan emphasized the council’s commitment to working closely with police and relevant stakeholders to bolster efforts in combating drug issues in Lautoka, stating, “We are constantly in touch with the stakeholders, meeting with different departments within the police IT and their enforcement to ensure we give our hands and shoulders to the police whenever we need to fight this drug problem.”

This united effort between the city council and law enforcement presents a promising approach to tackling drug-related challenges within the community, illustrating a strong commitment to public safety and well-being. By leveraging technology and facilitating better police presence in identified hotspots, the initiative aims to create a safer environment for Lautoka residents.

In summary, the Lautoka City Council and the police are taking significant steps to combat drug issues by utilizing technology, increasing surveillance, and coordinating resources to enhance public safety. Their proactive measures signal a positive move towards addressing this pressing social concern.
