Lautoka emerged victorious against Navua, winning 3-1 in a closely contested Group A match on the opening day of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) at Churchill Park.
Under the guidance of coach Shivam Raj, Lautoka started the game strongly, taking control in the first half and netting two goals within a two-minute span. Saula Waqa opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a well-placed header off a free-kick delivered by Zibraaz Sahib. Just two minutes later, midfielder Sitiveni Cavuilagi increased Lautoka’s lead, cleverly chipping the ball into an empty net after spotting goalkeeper Jovilisi Borisi off his line.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, Lautoka faced pressure in the second half as Navua, spurred on by the fast-paced play of Thomas Dunn, began to create several scoring opportunities. As tensions rose, referee Neeshil Varman issued several cards, including a red card to Lautoka’s Sakaraia Naisua for a second yellow.
Navua’s hopes were rekindled when Jared Rongosulia’s curled shot slipped from veteran goalkeeper Beniamino Mateinaqara’s grasp, crossing the line and giving Navua a goal, making for an exciting finish to the match. Despite their efforts to find an equalizer, Lautoka’s victory was solidified in injury time when Sairusi Nalaubu connected with a long clearance from Mateinaqara, easily rounding the keeper to score.
Looking ahead, Navua will face off against Flick Hygiene Suva at 2pm tomorrow, while Lautoka is set to take on Extra Supermarket Labasa in the highlight match of Day 2 at 8pm.
