Lautoka emerged victorious in the 2024 Rooster Chicken/Scoops Ice-Cream Battle of the Giants, held at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, by defeating Nadi 2-0 in a thrilling final.
Strikers Saula Waqa and Sairusi Nalaubu each scored a goal, securing the Blues’ second consecutive title of the season.
The Western-based final began at a fast pace with both teams making early attempts. Waqa, Aporosa Yada, and Nalaubu were aggressive on the attack for Lautoka, while Ali Naseri, Siotame Kubu, and Eneriko Matau posed threats for Nadi.
Nadi’s goalkeeper, Joela Biuvanua, made several excellent saves, leading to a scoreless first half.
A slight drizzle during the second half made the pitch slippery, affecting the players’ performance. However, Lautoka’s experienced players, including Antonio Tuivuna and Captain Ilimotama Jese, maintained a strong defense.
In the 64th minute, Waqa earned a penalty after being fouled in an aerial battle inside the box. His successful penalty kick put Lautoka ahead.
The rain intensified, forcing the teams to alter their strategies and use long through balls. This allowed Lautoka to penetrate Nadi’s defense, with Epeli Leiroti assisting Nalaubu to score in the 80th minute.
Despite Nadi’s continued efforts until the final whistle, they couldn’t score, ending the match 2-0 in favor of Lautoka.
Lautoka received $17,000 as prize money, while Nadi earned $5,000 for reaching the final.
