Lautoka Residents Face Safety Fears Amid Darkened Streets

Residents along Vomo Street in Lautoka are expressing concerns for their safety due to non-functional street lights that have been out for several months. This issue appears to extend across various streets in the city, leaving many residents confused about who to contact for repairs.

Local resident Peni Nabainivalu remarked on the ongoing problem, stating, “I didn’t know whom to complain to about this matter. The lights haven’t been working for almost one year now. It is a matter of safety for the people around here, especially the older residents.” He highlighted that intoxicated individuals frequently gather under the trees, raising concerns about security. Additionally, he pointed out that the lack of lighting has led to uncomfortable situations, with reports of young boys lurking in the darkness.

Nabainivalu also recounted a recent incident where his brother-in-law’s vehicle was vandalized, with its back window smashed while parked. Another resident, Rajesh Lata, shared similar frustrations. She had contacted the Lautoka City Council, only to be instructed to reach out to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), a task she finds daunting.

Lata expressed her anxiety over the situation, saying, “People come and sit under the trees across from my home during the night. I don’t know why only a section of the streetlights in front of my house isn’t working. This is a busy road, and people are constantly moving. We never know what can happen. I’m scared that someone can take advantage of the darkness and try breaking into my home.”

As safe street lighting is vital for urban safety, residents are hopeful that authorities will take the necessary actions to illuminate their streets and enhance security. Queries sent to the Fiji Roads Authority have not yet received a response.
