Residents along Vomo Street in Lautoka are expressing growing concerns for their safety due to several non-functional street lights that have been out of service for months. Similar issues with street lighting are affecting various streets in Lautoka, leaving residents uncertain about whom to contact for repairs.
Peni Nabainivalu, a local resident, voiced his frustration, stating that the lights have been out for nearly a year, creating a hazardous situation, particularly for elderly individuals in the area. He mentioned that intoxicated individuals often gather under the trees at night, complicating efforts to reach out to the appropriate authorities such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) for assistance.
The lack of adequate lighting has reportedly led to harassment cases, with young boys lurking in the shadows. In one troubling incident, Nabainivalu’s brother-in-law had his vehicle vandalized, sustaining damage to its back window while parked.
Another resident, Rajesh Lata, has faced similar challenges. Although she contacted the Lautoka City Council, she was referred to the FRA for further action, leaving her frustrated and unsure of the process. She expressed fear regarding the darkness impacting her home, as groups often gather near her property during the night.
As street lighting is critical for urban safety, residents are hopeful that authorities will prioritize the restoration of functional streetlights to enhance security in their neighborhoods. Queries sent to the FRA regarding this issue have yet to receive a response.
