Residents along Vomo Street, one of Lautoka’s busiest thoroughfares, are expressing concerns for their safety due to several non-functional streetlights that have remained out of order for months. Many neighborhoods in Lautoka are reportedly experiencing similar issues, leaving residents uncertain on how to report the problems.
Peni Nabainivalu, a local resident, highlighted his frustration, stating, “I didn’t know whom to complain to about this matter. The lights haven’t been working for almost one year now. It is a matter of safety for the people around here, especially the elderly.” He noted that intoxicated individuals frequently gather under the trees, making it difficult for residents to know how to reach out to the relevant authorities like the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) for assistance with the streetlight issues.
The lack of adequate lighting has raised safety concerns, with reports of harassment emerging as young boys are said to be lurking in the shadows of unlit streets. Nabainivalu shared a distressing incident where his brother-in-law’s vehicle was vandalized, with its back window smashed while parked.
Another resident, Rajesh Lata, also voiced her worries. She reached out to the Lautoka City Council but was advised to contact the FRA instead. “I contacted the Lautoka City Council and they told me that I should complain to FRA, but I don’t know how to. People come and sit under the trees across from my home during the night. I don’t know why only a section of the streetlights in front of my house isn’t working,” she explained. “This is a busy road, and people are constantly moving. We never know what can happen. I’m scared that someone can take advantage of the darkness and try breaking into my home.”
As street lighting is crucial for urban safety, residents are hopeful for prompt action to ensure their streets are illuminated and secure. Inquiries made to the FRA have not yet received a response.
