Gavin Whiteside, CEO of ASPEN Medical, has recognized the significant amount of work still required at Lautoka Hospital. His comments followed a complaint from visitor Rakesh Sharma, who reported poor conditions in the Trauma Ward, including a non-functional air conditioning unit.
Sharma described the environment as unacceptable, citing broken floor tiles, unclean ceiling fans, damaged armchairs, and worn-out mattresses. He remarked that the overall setting felt dull and uninviting.
Earlier in June, Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad informed Parliament that the government allocates nearly $10 million monthly for patient services at Aspen-managed Ba and Lautoka hospitals. These facilities account for more than 20% of the national health budget. Prasad also mentioned a 2019 decision mandating the Fiji National Provident Fund to acquire an 80% stake in Health Care Fiji Pte Ltd as part of a public-private partnership (PPP).
Under the PPP, Aspen has pledged to deliver internationally recognized healthcare to residents of the Western Division. Whiteside emphasized the importance of prioritizing resources and adopting a phased strategy. He noted that enhancing healthcare services is their primary focus, which involves substantial investments in modern equipment, staff training, and expanding available medical services such as cardiac surgery, mammography, and pediatric care.
Key upcoming projects include installing a new roof for the entire hospital and significant renovations to facilitate the addition of an MRI machine and a cath lab, along with enhancements to the Emergency Department. Whiteside acknowledged the progress made but emphasized the necessity for continued improvements. He urged the community to remain patient and supportive during this transformation process.
