Lautoka Boosts Security: Are Late-Night Disturbances on the Rise?

The rise in incidents involving intoxicated individuals loitering in Lautoka has led the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to enhance security measures throughout the city. In a recent statement, chamber president Samy Narendra Swamy outlined the chamber’s collaboration with local police to increase patrols and ensure public safety.

Swamy highlighted the objective of these initiatives is to address several safety issues, including property damage, harassment of shoppers, and disturbances that affect the travel experience during late-night hours. “Drunkards causing disturbances in the evenings and late night hours are a growing issue,” he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to safeguard the community.

As part of these enhanced measures, the LCCI has proposed redirecting bus and trailer traffic away from the central business area. Additionally, a temporary parking area at the Churchill Park Carnival Ground will be established to facilitate easier access for private vehicles, offering a more convenient shopping experience, particularly during the festive season.

The collaboration between the LCCI, Lautoka City Council (LCC), and local police will also lead to the installation of improved CCTV cameras in key city locations to combat criminal activities prevalent around certain shops and hotspots.

Foot patrols will increase significantly, with city rangers supported by security businesses contributing to the city’s overall safety. In preparation for the festive celebrations, the LCC is also focused on providing more recreational spaces and attractive lighting around central areas to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Furthermore, the Chamber urges local business owners and shoppers to remain alert against potential scams, especially during the busy holiday shopping period. Swamy has advised shop owners to maintain fair pricing practices to ensure customers have a pleasant and secure shopping experience.

Overall, these proactive steps illustrate a community-focused approach to safety and convenience, promising a more secure environment for residents and visitors alike, especially during the festive season.

Summary: The Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry is working with local police to enhance security measures in response to a rise in disturbances caused by intoxicated individuals. New initiatives include increased police patrols, enhanced lighting, traffic rerouting, and the establishment of temporary parking to improve safety and convenience for the community during the festive season.
