Lau Yaubula Youth Festival Highlights Importance of Cultural Preservation and Combats Youth Issues in Fiji

The Lau Yaubula Youth Festival, an event centered on the preservation of traditional culture and heritage, took place in Suva last week. The festival is designed to pass on traditional wisdom and safeguard the local way of life.

Youth and Sports Minister, Jese Saukuru, was invited by the Lau youths to officially conclude the festival. Mr. Saukuru praised the attendees for their rich traditional reception, and underscored the significance of restoring the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC). By reinstating the GCC, Fijians can reconnect with their cultural roots and traditions, explained Mr. Saukuru.

The minister also addressed the grave issue of drug abuse among young people, stressing the crucial role they play in tackling this problem. The festival’s theme, “Mo Kilai iko Mada” (Know who you are), emphasized the importance of self-discovery and understanding one’s identity.

Mr. Saukuru expressed his gratitude towards the Lau Provincial Council for tackling youth issues such as drug abuse, unemployment, and lack of participation in community activities. The council’s Youth in Conservation initiative aims to involve young individuals in community conservation efforts.

Encouraging further civic engagement, Mr. Saukuru urged Lau’s youth to recognize their community roles and to strive for the betterment of the Lau province.
