Landowners Left in the Lurch: A Promised Meeting That Never Happened

Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) chairman Sipiriano Nariva has voiced his frustration over the absence of a meeting with Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo concerning the renewal of the Special Prospecting Licence (SPL). The landowners have been opposing the SPL renewal since earlier this year, prompting Vosarogo to arrange a meeting, which ultimately did not occur.

Nariva pointed out that the LAMA committee had previously discussed the SPL for the Namosi Joint Venture in August of the prior year, reiterating their ongoing advocacy against the renewal. He emphasized their efforts to engage both the government and media on this urgent matter. With the year coming to a close, Nariva expressed concern over the lack of communication from the Minister, noting that while Vosarogo met with the Vunivalu last week, the landowners are still waiting for their promised discussion.

He stressed the importance of keeping landowners informed, particularly regarding compulsory acquisition clauses outlined in the 2013 Constitution. Vosarogo has indicated that the ministry is not required to update LAMA directly, as it primarily coordinates with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs through the Roko Tui Namosi’s office on behalf of the relevant landowning unit.

Despite the current challenges, there remains hope that a resolution can be reached. Ongoing dialogue could lead to mutual understanding and better collaboration between landowners and the government, ultimately benefiting all parties involved in the decision-making process.

In summary, the landowners are awaiting a crucial meeting that has yet to materialize, as they remain committed to their stance against the renewal of the SPL. Open communication and transparency will be key to resolving these issues moving forward.
