Landowners Celebrate as Buy-Back Scheme Reaches Milestone

Three freehold titles have been officially transferred to landowners, including Tuvumaca, Weilagi/Yavusa Wairuku, Waivunia, Mataqali Bitolevu (Serua), and Yavusa Vugalei from Kasavu Village in Naitasiri. The most recent beneficiaries, the Yavusa Vugalei of Kasavu Village, purchased 74 acres of land in Waidra for $148,000, receiving their title on Friday, September 27, from Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, during a ceremony held in Waidra.

Minister Vosarogo encouraged the members of Yavusa Vugalei to take advantage of various government initiatives as outlined in the 2024-2025 budget. He highlighted 15 programs available through different ministries aimed at supporting land development, including land clearing, drainage, preparation, and crop cultivation.

“Understand the significance of using the land effectively and sustainably, and be aware of the opportunities provided by the Coalition Government. It is crucial to remain vigilant for new possibilities,” Vosarogo advised.

He further urged persistence in seeking assistance: “Keep knocking and be relentless until you receive help. Persistence shapes your path and ensures that your determination is heard. The world pays attention to those who refuse to be overlooked. Continue to strive forward.”

Naitasiri High Chief, Turaga na Qaranivalu Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, reiterated Vosarogo’s statements and urged male members of the Yavusa to recognize the burden placed on women to support their families. He emphasized the need for change in community attitudes.

“This is a pressing issue in our communities today, and it must end,” Ratu Inoke stated. He encouraged a reduction in the overconsumption of yaqona, advocating for utilizing that time to devise plans for effectively using the returned land for future generations.

Additionally, the Turaga na Qanivalu has invited Minister Vosarogo to return to Waidra next year to observe the progress made by Yavusa Vugalei on their land.

The Buy-Back Scheme has successfully restored 2,465 acres of land to traditional owners, benefiting four landowning units over three decades. Of the total units assisted, four have cleared their dues, amounting to $806,770.80, which contributes 18.3 percent of the total recovery.
